Congratulations to Simon Williams, who took the final step towards the GM title when his rating rose above 2500 during this year's Hastings Masters tournament. We presented Simon with a bottle of champagne before the London League match against Streatham on 9 January.
The picture shows Simon flanked by club members IM Bob Wade on the left and IM Matthieu Cornette on the right. Matthieu is also very close to securing the GM title.

Athenaeum Chess Club held a simultaneous exhibition on Monday 17 December. IM Simon Williams gave the simul against members of the Athenaeum London League 2nd and 3rd teams. Ten players took part. Simon won nine games, conceding only one draw to Steven Walsh. Everyone seems to have enjoyed it and another simul will probably be arranged at Easter.
